Campfires and Stoves

Backcountry campfiresProhibited

Wood or charcoal campfires prohibited outside developed recreation sites. Portable gas/fuel stoves allowed with valid California Campfire Permit.

Conditions

  • Valid California Campfire Permit required for portable gas/fuel stoves
  • Portable lanterns/stoves using gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel only

Exceptions

  • FS-7700-48 permit holders
  • Federal/State/local officers and organized rescue/fire-fighting personnel in official duty
Campground campfiresRestricted

Campfires allowed only in developed campgrounds in USFS-provided campfire rings and Klamath stoves. Valid California Campfire Permit required.

  • Valid California Campfire Permit required
  • Only in USFS-provided campfire rings and Klamath stoves
  • Wood or charcoal BBQ allowed in USFS-provided grills only
  • Gas grills allowed with all combustible material removed five feet from base
Propane fuel and camp stovesRestricted

Portable gas/fuel stoves allowed outside developed sites with valid California Campfire Permit. Gas grills allowed in developed areas with cleared base.

  • Valid California Campfire Permit required for backcountry use
  • Gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel only
  • Five-foot clearance of combustible material required for gas grills in developed areas
