Backcountry campfires are prohibited unless you have a California Campfire Permit and are using a portable gas or fuel stove at least five feet from flammable materials. Campfires are allowed in designated rings at developed campgrounds and picnic areas. Always check the specific regulations for your intended location and confirm the latest weather forecast before your trip.

- Gas, kerosene, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel with shutoff valve
- At least 5 feet from flammable materials
Exceptions
- Valid California Campfire Permit holders with compliant portable fuel devices
- Resort/organizational camp special use authorization holders
- Forest Service non-special use authorization holders for non-recreational activities
Campground campfiresAllowed
Campfires allowed in Forest Service-provided campfire rings or BBQs at developed campgrounds and picnic areas.
