Campfires are prohibited in backcountry and dispersed areas, but allowed in developed campgrounds and recreation sites with fire rings or charcoal grills. Portable stoves using gas, kerosene, or pressurized fuel are permitted with a California Campfire Permit. Always check the latest weather and specific site regulations before your trip.

Campfires prohibited in backcountry and dispersed areas. Exception: portable campfire ring/pit with gas/kerosene/pressurized fuel and shut-off valve, 3+ feet from flammable materials, with valid California Campfire Permit.

- Portable campfire ring/pit must be 3+ feet from flammable materials
- Only gas, kerosene, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel allowed
- Device must have shut-off valve
- Valid California Campfire Permit required
Exceptions
- Federal, State, or local officers in official duty
- Organized rescue or fire-fighting force in official duty
- Persons with valid California Campfire Permit (with conditions)
- Persons with Forest Service Permit FS-7700-48
Campground campfiresRestricted
Campfires allowed in developed campgrounds and recreation sites with charcoal grills or fire rings.
