The North Fork John Day Ranger District has a high fire danger rating. The McCully fire is 13,545 acres and 59% contained, while the Olive Butte and Salmon fires are largely contained at 3,092 and 1,433 acres respectively. Campfires are prohibited in the backcountry but allowed in designated rings at developed sites. Propane stoves are permitted with specific clearance, but explosives and open flame torches are banned. Check current conditions and specific area closures before your trip.

Campfires prohibited in backcountry; wood-burning stoves allowed with 5-ft chimney, spark screen, 3-ft vegetation clearance.

Conditions

  • Wood-burning stove must have 5-foot minimum chimney with ¼ inch mesh spark arresting screen
  • Remove all flammable vegetation within 3-foot radius including overhanging material
