The Walla Walla Ranger District is experiencing high fire danger with several active fires. The Hagen fire is 61,385 acres and 60% contained, the Paradise fire is 9,654 acres and 28% contained, and the North Cayuse fire is 4,887 acres and 97% contained. Campfires are prohibited in the backcountry, but allowed in designated rings at developed recreation sites. Check specific closures for roads and recreation sites related to the Hagen and Paradise fires before your trip.

Backcountry campfiresProhibited

Campfires prohibited in backcountry; wood-burning stoves allowed with 5-ft chimney, spark screen, 3-ft vegetation clearance.

Conditions

  • Wood-burning stove must have 5-foot minimum chimney with ¼ inch mesh spark arresting screen
  • Remove all flammable vegetation within 3-foot radius including overhanging material

Exceptions

  • Wood-burning stove with required chimney and spark screen in cleared area
Campground campfiresAllowed

Campfires allowed in designated campfire rings at developed recreation sites.

Propane and pressurized fuel stoves allowed with on/off switch and 3-foot vegetation clearance.

Hagen Fire closure: specific roads and recreation sites closed (Umatilla Forks, Woodward, Woodland campgrounds; multiple trailheads and trails). Paradise Fire closure: FSR 64-65 area and Mill Creek Watershed closed.

  • No entry to Paradise Fire closure area; FSR 64-65 and Mill Creek Watershed closed
  • Campgrounds closed: Umatilla Forks, Woodward, Woodland
  • Trailheads and trails closed: Zig Zag Springs, Corporation/Lick Creek, North Fork Umatilla, Buck Creek, Horseshoe Prairie, Nine Mile, Lake Creek, South Fork Umatilla, Coyote Ridge

Exceptions

  • Permit FS-7700-48 holders
  • Federal, State, local officials and organized rescue/firefighting forces in official duty
  • Forest Service employees performing official duties
