Campfires prohibited within ¼ mile of Appalachian Trail (Beech Mountain Road to Massie Gap).

Conditions

  • Within ¼ mile of Appalachian Trail between Beech Mountain Road (AT Milepost 489.4) and Massie Gap (AT Milepost 501.8)

Exceptions

  • Persons with special use permit
  • Federal, State, or local officers in official duty
  • Organized rescue or firefighting personnel
Propane fuel and camp stovesRestricted

Propane and fuel stoves permitted with restrictions: must be shutoff-capable, used only in barren/cleared areas (3 feet clearance), never unattended.

Conditions

  • Device must be solely fueled by liquid petroleum or LPG and have on/off capability
  • Must be used in area barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within three feet
  • Must not be left unattended
  • Must be fully extinguished after use
