Campfires and Stoves

Backcountry campfiresRestricted

Campfires prohibited in Ansel Adams Wilderness above 10,000 ft north of Mt. Emerson-Humphreys ridge and above 10,400 ft south of ridge; also prohibited in Twenty Lakes Basin of Hoover Wilderness. Portable gas/liquid fuel stoves allowed with valid wilderness permit.

Conditions

  • Elevation-based restrictions in Ansel Adams Wilderness (10,000 ft north of Mt. Emerson-Humphreys ridge; 10,400 ft south)
  • Specific area closure: Twenty Lakes Basin in Hoover Wilderness
  • Portable gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel stoves permitted with valid wilderness or campfire permit

Exceptions

  • Persons with FS-7700-48 permit exempting them from order
  • Federal, State, local officers or organized rescue/firefighting personnel in official duty
  • Valid wilderness or campfire permit holders may use portable stoves/lanterns with gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel
