Sulphur Ranger District Fire Danger & Restrictions

Fire danger is high in the Sulphur Ranger District. Backcountry campfires are prohibited, but campfires are allowed in developed campgrounds and picnic areas with permanent fire pits. Propane and gas stoves are permitted with a 3-foot cleared area. Check current conditions and specific area regulations before your trip.

Backcountry campfiresProhibited

Backcountry campfires prohibited except in device fueled by liquid/gas with 3-ft cleared area or fully enclosed metal stove with 10-ft cleared area.

Conditions

  • Device must be solely fueled by liquid or gas and turnable on/off
  • Area must be barren or cleared of all flammable materials within 3 feet of device
  • Fully enclosed metal stove must have chimney at least 5 feet long with ¼ inch mesh screen spark arrestor
  • Stove area must be barren or cleared of all flammable materials within 10 feet

Exceptions

  • Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 specifically exempting them
  • Federal, State, or Local Officers and organized rescue/firefighting services in official duty

Campground campfiresAllowed

Campfires allowed in developed campgrounds and picnic areas with permanent metal or concrete fire pits or grates.

Conditions

  • Must use permanent metal or concrete fire pit or grate installed and maintained by USFS
  • Only in developed recreation sites (campgrounds and picnic areas)

Propane and gas stoves allowed with 3-foot cleared area around device.

Conditions

  • Device must be solely fueled by liquid or gas and turnable on/off
  • Must be used in area barren or cleared of all flammable materials within 3 feet of device

Welding and torch work allowed with 10-foot cleared area and Class 2A fire extinguisher present.

Conditions

  • Must be in cleared area of at least 10 feet in diameter
  • Chemical pressurized fire extinguisher with minimum 8 oz. capacity and Class 2A rating must be kept with operator
