Backcountry campfires prohibited except in enclosed stoves with chimney and spark arrestor in cleared areas.

Conditions

  • Fully enclosed metal stove with chimney at least 5 feet long
  • Mesh screen spark arrestor with ¼ inch or smaller openings
  • Area barren or cleared of flammable materials within 10 feet

Exceptions

  • Persons with FS Permit No. FS-7700-48 exempting them from this order
  • Federal, State, or Local Officers in performance of official duty
  • Organized rescue or firefighting service in performance of official duty
Propane fuel and camp stovesRestricted

Propane and gas stoves allowed in cleared areas with proper shutoff capability.

Conditions

  • Device solely fueled by liquid or gas with on/off capability
  • Area barren or cleared of all flammable materials within 3 feet of device
Campground campfiresAllowed

Campground campfires allowed in permanent metal or concrete fire pits/grates at developed recreation sites.

Conditions

  • Must be in permanent metal or concrete fire pit or grate
  • Must be installed and maintained by U.S. Forest Service
  • Located at developed recreation sites (campgrounds and picnic areas)

Welding and torch work allowed in cleared areas with fire extinguisher present.

Conditions

  • Cleared area of at least 10 feet in diameter
  • Chemical pressurized fire extinguisher with minimum 8 oz. capacity and Class 2A rating kept with operator

  • Persons with FS Permit No. FS-7700-48 exempting them from this order
  • Federal, State, or Local Officers in performance of official duty
  • Organized rescue or firefighting service in performance of official duty
