Council Ranger District Fire Danger & Restrictions

Very high fire danger today.

Fire danger is very high in the Council Ranger District. Campfires are prohibited in the backcountry, but allowed in permanent fire pits at developed campgrounds. Liquid fuel stoves and propane stoves are permitted with proper clearance. Always check current conditions and specific site regulations before your trip.

Backcountry campfiresProhibited

Backcountry campfires prohibited. Exceptions: liquid petroleum fuel devices in cleared areas (3 ft), fully enclosed metal stoves with 5 ft chimney in cleared areas (10 ft).

Conditions

  • Liquid petroleum fuel device must be turnable on/off
  • Device must be in area barren or cleared of flammable materials within 3 feet
  • Fully enclosed metal stove requires 5 ft chimney minimum
  • Mesh screen spark arrestor with ¼ inch or less opening required
  • Stove must be in area barren or cleared of flammable materials within 10 feet

Exceptions

  • Persons with FS-7700-48 permit exempting them from this order
  • Federal, State, or local law enforcement or organized rescue/firefighting in official duty

Campground campfires allowed only in permanent metal or concrete fire pits/grates installed and maintained by Forest Service at developed recreation sites.

Conditions

  • Fire must be in permanent metal or concrete fire pit or grate
  • Fire pit/grate must be installed and maintained by Forest Service
  • Must be at developed recreation sites (campgrounds and picnic areas)

Propane fuel and camp stovesRestricted

Propane and liquid petroleum fuel stoves allowed with strict clearance requirements.

Conditions

  • Device must be solely fueled by liquid petroleum fuel
  • Device must be turnable on and off
  • Must be used in area barren or cleared of all flammable materials within 3 feet
  • Fully enclosed metal stove alternative: 5 ft chimney minimum, ¼ inch mesh screen spark arrestor, 10 ft clearance of flammable materials
