Fire danger is high in Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. Backcountry campfires are prohibited except for propane or liquid fuel stoves with a 3-foot clearance around vegetation. Campfires may be allowed in designated rings at developed recreation sites, but check specific campground rules before you go. Fireworks and explosives are prohibited. Always confirm current conditions and restrictions with the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest before your trip.

Backcountry campfires prohibited except camp stoves with 3-ft vegetation clearance.
Conditions
- Camp stoves fueled solely by liquid petroleum or liquefied petroleum gas
- Flammable vegetation cleared minimum 3-feet away from open flame on all sides
- Propane/liquid fuel fires require 3-foot vegetation clearance
- Wood stoves require 5-foot chimney with ¼-inch mesh spark screen and 3-foot vegetation clearance

- Camp stoves fueled by LP/LPG with required clearance
Campground campfiresRestricted
Campground campfires prohibited except camp stoves with 3-ft vegetation clearance.
Conditions
- Camp stoves fueled solely by liquid petroleum or liquefied petroleum gas
- Flammable vegetation cleared minimum 3-feet away from open flame on all sides
Exceptions
- Camp stoves fueled by LP/LPG with required clearance
- Within a designated campfire ring at a developed recreation site listed in Exhibit A

- Wood burning stove equipped with chimney at least 5-feet in length and ¼-inch mesh spark arresting screen
- All flammable vegetation within 3-foot radius cleared, including overhanging material
ExplosivesProhibited
Explosives and fireworks prohibited.
Exceptions
- Federal, State, or local officers in performance of official duty
- Persons with Forest Service Permit FS-7700-48
