The Whitman Ranger District is at an extreme fire danger rating. Active fires include the McCully Fire (13,545 acres, 59% contained), Olive Butte Fire (3,092 acres, 95% contained), and Anthony Fire (2,584 acres, 96% contained). Campfires are allowed in designated rings at developed sites, but backcountry campfires are prohibited except in the Eagle Cap Wilderness or with a liquid/propane stove and 3-foot clearance. Explosives and pyrotechnic devices are prohibited. Check specific area closures for the Anthony, McCully, and Burnt Creek fires before your trip, as many roads and trails remain closed.

Multiple fire closure areas: Anthony Fire perimeter (FSR 7300, 4300, 4350, 7312 closed; campgrounds and trailheads closed); McCully Fire area (Elkhorn Scenic Byway section closed, trails and trailheads closed); Burnt Creek Fire perimeter (all roads and trails closed); Salmon and Olive Butte Fire area (trails closed, through traffic on FSRs allowed).

  • McCully Fire: NFS rd. 7300 open except section between FSR 5200 and 5185; multiple trails and trailheads closed; Peavy Cabin closed; Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort facilities excluded
  • Burnt Creek Fire: All NFS land and roads within perimeter closed to public access
  • Salmon and Olive Butte Fire: Trails closed; through traffic on FSRs remains open
